About Marian Ormont

Marian Ormont is a mixed media artist whose layered paintings move between landscape and abstraction. Working primarily with acrylic paint and collage, she incorporates book pages and letters, handmade and hand-painted papers, fabrics and found materials to create richly textured surfaces.
Art has been part of Marian's life since childhood, beginning with drawing, painting and sculpture and later photography. Although she ultimately pursued a career in medicine and psychiatry, she continued making art throughout her adult life before turning her attention to mixed media painting full time.
Her years as a psychiatrist fostered an enduring interest in thought and emotion—how they emerge, interact and influence our lives. That interest continues to inform her art, particularly her abstract work, where layers, marks, fragments of text and partially obscured imagery frequently suggest the complexity of the mind.
Marian's work is also strongly influenced by the natural world and by the places she encounters. Her landscapes and cityscapes may begin with memories of a particular place or view, her own photographs, or a combination of the two. Through layers of paint and collage, the imagery often moves between the recognizable and the abstract.
Marian divides her time between Devon, Pennsylvania, New York City and Ontario, Canada.
